1992 Subaru EJ-22 Engine For Sale

I occasionally receive private information on aircraft and engines for sale. I post that information here. Please contact the owner directly as I usually have no additional information.

From Rex Wahl (rexwahl at msn dot com):

I have a Subaru EJ engine from a '92 Subaru Legacy Wagon for sale. My step-daughter wrecked it on Wednesday July 21, 2011.

Engine looks to be fine, starts and runs. No fluids leaked but it is totaled (frame, suspension). We have less than 65,000 on this bought about year ago. Complete car-fax low miles seem real. Engine type is EJ 22EAA2BM, 16 valve MPFI engine. Injector pump is fine too.

I live in Los Lunas, NM. Can remove engine.

I have about ten hours of flight time since my freeway landing. Most of this time has been spent re-tuning my EC2 EFI settings. I've been a bit surprised at how "uneasy" I've felt while flying but this seems to have passed and I'm feeling good again.

NOS RULES!!

I finally got around to trying a nitrous system on my plane!! WOW!! It is impressive stuff!

My home airport is at 4830' MSL. This morning it was about 45 degrees. I'm not sure exactly what the nitrous jet size was but it was plenty to be sure. I started the take off roll and hit the NOS button just before lift-off speed, this is about 3500 rpm. The engine quickly accelerated to 4500 rpm and the climb was nearly straight up maintaining 100 kts. My old VSI is only a 2000 fpm unit and it was pegged. My electronic VSI (MGL Flight2) was showing 6500 fpm. I passed right thru pattern altitude and kept going up to 11,000'. I got off the NOS button and leveled out. The engine temps were high but not too high. I'm guessing all of this taking less than a minute based on the VSI value but it sure felt like less than that.

After letting the temps come back to normal I decided a speed run was in order. Starting at 11,000' and 125 kts indicated, I pressed the NOS button and held on! RPM jumped to 5500 rpm and speed shot thru 240 kts IAS VERY quickly. I started getting scared so released the NOS button and pulled up. I finally got leveled off and slowed down a 16,500'.

This NOS stuff is RRRREEEEEELLLLYYYY KEWL. I currently only have a 10lb bottle but think I'll install another one just for fun!!

A short flight to breakfast today turned into something much more exciting - a power out landing on Interstate 25. I've determined that the problem was electrical back in the cockpit but waiting for verification of that.
More WATER!!!

I have been flying since Thanksgiving 2009 without a thermostat due to the coolant problem that I had on the way home from Missouri. Yesterday I decided it was time to fix this. I installed a new water pump from AutoZone (not an OEM unit), timing belt, and Subaru thermostat (used). Both the existing pump and belt looked to be in great condition. While disassembling, I noted that my timing belt appeared to be off one tooth on the crankshaft pulley.

I flew 1.1 hours this morning and the cooling system worked exactly as expected (temperature sat at ~195 the entire flight). I spent the time flying playing with my EFI mixture mapping so was at a wide range of RPM.

Condition Inspection Time Again

It seems that another year has come and gone and my Q was once again due for its condition inspection. So to work I went. I flew ~130 hours last year and the Q came thru with flying colors - I did not find a single "issue". The engine is running great, compression is good, and borescope on the cylinders looks good. I replaced fuel filters and a few peices of fuel hose that was looking old.

Time for an oil change

Looks like my last oil change was 84 hours ago so figured that I had better change it again. The recent long trips mean that I have been using a lot of 100LL. Of course, this means lots of lead contamination of the oil (I am told) so need to get that out of my engine. I filled with 10W-30 for winter use.

Tire Change

Today I replaced my main gear tires. They were VERY worn. In fact, the chords were showing thru in one spot! The old tires were Lamb 11x4.00-5 6 ply tires (part 06-07400 at Aircraft Spruce). I replaced them with the same size Lamb 8 ply tires. I'll have to dig for the exact numbers but it seems that I have gotten about 200 hours of use out of these tires and that includes LOTS of landings.

2009 Tandem Wing Fly-In

Just returned from the 2009 Tandem Wing Fly-In at Beatrice, NE. Had a wonderful trip and the plane ran perfectly. It is always great to see old friends and make new friends. I flew a total of 10.1 hours. The first three legs I consumed 42.5 gals over 7.2 hrs averaging 5.9 gph over 871 nm for 23.5 statute miles per gallon. For this trip, I had an EGT sensor hooked up and ran 1400 to 1450 degrees for most of the trip. This is richer than I have flown previous trips (hence the lower mpg).
