I have recently sold my Q2 (March 2011).
Experimental or Sport Aviation is a fastest growing segment of aviation. The airplanes are owner built and maintained and follow standards created by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Most of the Sport Aviation aircraft utilize standard aircraft engines (Lycoming, Continental, and Rotax) but many use automotive engine conversions such as Subaru, Chevy, Ford, Honda, Suzuki, and so on. Modern automotive engines are extremely reliable and well built and offer excellent powerplant options for aircraft. In addition, Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and electronic instrumentation and has made for extremely efficient engine control systems. In-flight information systems and engine monitors provide computerized control and monitoring of systems which reduces pilot workload and increases efficency and safety.
On this site you will find a number of Subaru maintenance and service manuals as well as plans for the Quickie and Q2 aircraft. Either of these planes can be built from that documentation. However; the Q2 originally used premolded fuselage shells which a new builder would need to somehow create (possible but not easy). However; a huge amount of information has been learned about these planes over the years. All of this is documented by the Quickie Builders Association in newsletters and mailing list. This information is essential for constructing one of these airplanes today.
